How long you wear your human hair extensions can be determined by a few factors: the quality and care of the installation, the condition of your natural hair, and the natural appearance you are seeking while rocking your beautiful human hair extensions.

As a rule of thumb, there are suggested lengths of time for all human hair extensions. Don’t get me wrong, I too have had experiences where I’ve ignored the suggested wear time,

“just one more week”, “it still looks good”, “I can still cover”, “I’ll just use a bobby pin”, “as soon as I get time”.

I have heard and used them all, but all of these excuses are at the expense of your natural hair. Ultimately, there is no good excuse for neglecting your natural hair. Extensions are not bad for your hair. It’s poor installation, lack of care while wearing them, and the abuse of time that causes damage to one’s natural hair.

Here is a simple guide to see the suggested length of time for wearing your human hair extensions:

  • Glue in shampoo to shampoo, not to exceed 2 weeks
  • Clip-ins daily or shampoo to shampoo
  • Single tracks sewn in-up to 6 weeks
  • Full or partial extensions of 2 months
  • Wig Install one month

How Long should you wear your extensions?Single human hair extensions have the shortest wear time. Glue-in extensions are worn from shampoo to shampoo. I recommend not exceeding 2 weeks. Clip-ins may also be worn shampoo to shampoo but can be removed on a daily basis. Single sewn-in extensions can be worn anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks with shampoos in between. Once an extension begins to sag, drop, or snag, regardless of the installation method, it is time to remove it. I suggest having your sewn-in extensions, wigs, and weaves removed by a professional hair stylist.

Full or partial human hair weaves should only be worn for two months. I know, there are some that go as long as four months, but this is definitely at the expense of your natural hair. At 2 months, the average weave has grown out and no longer looks, feels, or smells as fresh as it should. Coverage becomes more difficult as a weave is worn, and it is almost impossible to keep the scalp and hair cleansed and well-conditioned.

If you have a human hair wig installed, I suggest having it removed once a month so your natural hair can be shampooed and conditioned. Once your hair is clean and dry, you can have it re-installed. Be sure to get a trim every other month.

Although the length of time to maintain your human hair installation is only a suggestion, choosing a professional to do your hair will get you the longest wear time possible.

Remember, regardless of the technique used, hair extensions should be removed at the suggested times so they do not compromise your natural hair. When wearing your human hair extensions, the goal should always be a perfect natural look. Once your extensions are no longer visually pleasing and are failing to compliment your beauty, they have the potential to harm your natural hair. Do not try to disguise your hair with hats, scarves, or other accessories to extend the wear time. Instead, have them removed so they can be re-installed.
