Wig or Weave

Wig or Weave

Although both raw or virgin human hair wigs and weaves have been around for many years, the stylists and women who choose to wear raw or virgin human hair wigs or weaves today have taken both concepts to the moon!

There was a time when the wearing of a wig or weave was distastefully obvious. Now I think we can all agree that the wearing of a human hair wig or weave is a desirable option. At any time, you can take raw human hair products and transform them into a show-stopping look, whether it be a custom wig, prefab, or a weave done by way of full head, partial, clip ins, single tracks, tape, or glue, you’ve done your job!

When asked, which do you prefer, a human hair wig or a weave? Which is better? Which should I choose? What is the distinction between the two,   you should want to know the difference.

WIG or WEAVE

There are many different cards that come into play when choosing between a human hair wig and a raw or virgin human hair weave, some being more obvious than others.

Things that come into play include but are not limited to cost, maintenance, the look, care of natural hair, time and comfort.

Let’s learn more, select the + next to each topic read about it…

Cost

The cost is one of the things that can be a deciding factor when choosing between a Human Hair Wig or Weave. Although a human hair wig may appear to be more expensive at first, it becomes more affordable over time.

Generally speaking, a high-quality raw human hair wig can seem expensive. But whether your intentions are to install the wig or to remove it daily, the cost is more effective because it is less expensive to install a wig than it is to install a weave.

The cost of 3 to 4 bundles of human hair and a closure would exceed the cost of the average prefabricated human hair wig of equal quality. However, a custom unit is capable of exceeding the price of both, with “custom” meaning the thickness, length, size, and style of choice.

This is the most appealing concept, although all can be amazing. A prefabricated wig can range from a low-end synthetic unit (which we will not be including in the debate) to low-end raw human hair, virgin human hair, or mid-range premium wigs. The price can range from $100s to $1,000s. An amazing look can be achieved at all levels.

A custom unit can require the same amount of product as a weave. On average, it takes 3–4 bundles and a closure, or frontal if desired, depending on the length and desired thickness. Naturally, the fee for creating and installing a custom unit (or not) varies, as does the instillation cost of a weave requiring the same amount of product.

However, once the unit is created, it then becomes reusable without re-creating, where as the weave needs to be taken down and then reinstalled  which equates to more money.

Custom Wig

The wig, on the other hand, would require a quick take down and re-braid in order to be reinstalled. This cost, in most cases, is much more affordable. A wig can also be unmade and the hair can be used for a human hair weave or a new custom unit of a different style at a different time.

This is equivalent to the reusability of the hair when wearing a sewn-in weave. The hair used for the weave can be reused for up to a year or longer, depending on the care and initial quality of the hair used. Even though cost is important, your decision between wigs and weaves should be based solely on your lifestyle and preference.

Maintenance

In the battle of wigs versus human hair weaves, the weave is very convenient once it has been installed. It actually becomes a part of you.

You wake up requiring minimal maintenance, needing only to touch bases with your beautiful new hair extensions throughout the day, finish with a bonnet, a scarf, wrapped, rolled (or not), which would be the same identical process for a wig that has been installed.

However, if you choose not to install your wig, it becomes a snatch and go! Imagine that!! requiring only a small amount of “Got 2 Be” holding spray, adhesive, or sweat spray to help secure the unit closer to the hairline keeping in mind that transparency and a natural appearance are your goals, always!

Whether your unit has combs or a fitted band so that you can feel secure, you’re able to step out and rock that baby with no hiccups.

You’re able to grab your wig and go! In the event of a bad hair day, your custom prefab wig will become your best friend. When role-playing or on that special date, she will feed that alter ego that most of us hope for. A custom prefab wig can be that “perfect” option! The human hair wig will last you for many, many years without fail, and may only require a few repairs or touch-ups in between.

The Look

Some people are afraid of the appearance of wearing a wig, but this is no longer a problem with the high-quality pre-plucked frontals and closures used to make the units and the level of skill stylists have today. Both of which supersede the units of yesteryear.

Whether you’re wearing a wig or a weave, face view should be the same. I always tell my clients who are concerned with the stigma of wearing a wig that no one but you is aware of what goes on behind the scenes, meaning once you get past the front, no one knows whether you are wearing single tracks, bundles sewn to a net, or a full wig. When done properly, all of the options should pass as natural.

The wigs are designed to protect. your natural hair.

The natural look of a wig install

The U-part wig is the type of wig that allows for a leave-out.

This can be requested on our custom request page. Whether a client is wearing three bundles and a frontal or closure, a bang, or purchases a prefab wig, it can be customized using the same amount of product.  The look should be equally amazing, seductive, and desirable all in one basket!

Care of Natural Hair

Being able to access your natural hair when considering a wig or a weave is always one of the things that will cause someone to side with one versus the other.

Being able to treat your natural hair is definitely a plus that comes with wearing human hair or a custom wig that has not been installed.

With a wig that is not installed, you’re able to reach your natural hair easily, allowing for care of your natural hair on a daily basis.

This method allows you to treat your scalp, massage, manipulate, and/or style your natural hair between washes. However, if your wig is installed, it may be two weeks to a month before you gain full access to your natural hair.

All in Weave

When wearing a human hair weave made of bundles and a lace front closure or frontal, you are able to access your natural hair through a net in most cases, but you will not be able to manipulate or comb through your natural hair and are limited in the change of style with the exception of the leave-out portion. Either way, the human hair wig prevails in comparison.

Timing

The time that goes into getting a weave installed versus installing a human hair wig or a prefab custom wig definitely tips the scale of preference.

The average visit for a sewn-in human hair weave and style can be 4 to 6 hours. whereas the time to install a wig can be 1 to 2 hours per visit on a good day.

If you choose to wear your human hair wig on a daily basis, there’s no limit to the amount of time you can save.

The Day to Day “Snatch and Go”!

Hands down less time is involved in deciding to wear a human hair wig (installed or not) versus a sewn in weave.

Comfort

When it comes to comfort. As they say, beauty is pain! But it does not have to be.

When you have a weave installed you may experience discomfort due to the braid down and sewing, which is to be expected when done properly. Although “loose” may feel better, braids that are not secured to the head quickly begin to sag, which can be damaging to your natural hair due to the weight of sewn-in tracks. When putting in a human hair wig or weave, you must have a secure braid down.

Braid-down for wig install

When it comes to wearing a wig that is installed, the perimeter may be slightly uncomfortable, but never as uncomfortable as that of a full head weave. This may vary depending on the stylists’ technique.

When a wig is worn and removed daily, there is no pain, but you may experience more warmth in the head considering the wig is sewn to a cap, which limits airflow. There are many caps available on the market to help minimize this discomfort.

A weave can be uncomfortable  but the discomfort will only last for a couple of days. Once the hair relaxes and begins to grow out, the discomfort will cease. The same would stand for a human hair wig. The initial installation may be slightly uncomfortable, but will soon pass. It’s one of those pick your poison type of situations.

The Wig vs. Weave

On average, I choose an installed custom wig as my go-to. Although I have been a consumer of most (if not all) types of wigs and weaves, I turn to my snatch and go wig.  However, when I choose to wear a part and/or leave it out, the weave is my thing! All of the options are simply amazing. There are so many options available to you. Allow your imagination and lifestyle to lead you. Set no limits, just have fun.

A trip to the moon? Yesssss! I’d have to call it a tie between wigs versus weaves. They both work, rock, and assist any beauty in being just that—beautiful!
